Massacre Of A Village
A Visit To Oradour-sur-Glane
A massacre took place in the town of Oradour-sur-Glane, in the Haute-Vienne region of France on Saturday 10th of June 1944.
As far as can be ascertained, the town ( faraway  from any  fighting), was not involved in any active resistance activity. However, that day, troops belonging to the
Der Führer Regiment of the 2nd Waffen SS Panzer Division Das Reich, drove into Oradour and killed a total of 642 men, women and children. The town was then
systematically looted with every building destroyed and set on fire.
Even today there is no proper explanation as to why the SS carried out this atrocity.  With most of the SS who took
Today, the town has been completely rebuilt but the destroyed town and its memorial visitor centre remain as a permanent reminder of what took place that
terrible day.  Walking around, there is a grim beauty about the place as nature has gradually softened the shattered remains with wild flowers, grass and trees.
Having said that there is no doubt that the visitor is still shocked at the sheer brutality of the action that took place there. Poignant reminders of everyday life
remain as they were found, with singer sowing  machines still sitting in windows,  burnt out bicycles,  bed frames, prams, pots and pans, cars and tools lying
everywhere.

I took a long time taking my photos and examining as much of the remains as was possible. I hope therefore that you will take the time browse this selection and
reflect on this tragedy.
