Royal Air Force Administrative Apprentice Association Multam A Parvo - Much From Little
|

Administrative Apprentice training of the 1st Entry began at RAF St Athan in May 1947 with a course length of 16 months. The course
was increased to 20 months in October 1948 and continued until December 1963 with the pass-out of the 46th Entry.
Training recommenced at RAF Hereford in September 1964 with the 301st Entry on a course of 12 months and continued until August
1973 when the final entry, the 330th, passed-out: Administrative Apprentice training in the Royal Air Force then ceased. Concurrent
with Entries 301 to 314, Administrative Apprentices were trained in the Medical Trade Group at RAF Hospital Halton.
Service numbers for Entries 1 to 46 and 301 to 310 (including the Medical Trade Group Entries) began with 592081 and continued to
596003, although following the pass-out of the 46th Entry and prior to the enlistment of the 301st Entry, Service numbers 594262 to
594300 were not allocated.
Apprentices in the 311th to 330th Entries were allocated numbers in the 8,000,000 block in common with all male recruits. Entries 1 to
46 ran concurrently as did entries 301 to 320 but thereafter there were only the 322, 324, 326 and 330 Entries.
Webmaster Note November 2009: Following information received from a member of the 330th entry, we are pleased to show below,
accurate information relating to service numbers issued to Apprentice Clerks and Admin Apprentices:
The block of numbers allocated for Apprentice Clerks in 1925 was 590001 to 594261, which seemingly provided for the Ruislip
apprentices (up to 592080) and for the entries from 1947 until the allocation was exhausted. The next batch of Administrative
Apprentice numbers allocated (in Oct 64) was from 594301 to 599999; the last number actually issued was 596003. With the next
batch of numbers starting at 600000 it would appear that the only individuals with 596XXX numbers were admin apprentices and there
were only ever 4 of them. The list confirms that numbers 594262 to 594300 were never allocated to any elements of the RAF. Turning
to the 311 to 330 entry era the list shows that a block from 8000005 to 8002157 was used rather than being allocated from the male
recruit block as the web-site suggests. As a result it should be relatively easy to identify anyone from this era, with the exception of
those who came to us via Halton, Cosford or Locking.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR ENTRY LIST. You will see that on some of the lists there are names without Service numbers; since the Service
numbers ran concurrently the probable explanation is that these Apprentices were ex-aircraft apprentices transferred from other
training schools
